1927ല്‍ ഹരിയാനയിലെ രോഹ്തക് ജില്ലയില്‍ ഒരു മുസ്ലീം കുടുംബത്തിലായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജനനം. 19 വയസ്സുവരെ യാതൊരു ഔപചാരിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. ഹിന്ദി അക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ പഠിക്കാന്‍ പിന്നീട് സ്വയം നിശ്ചയിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. 1947ലെ ഇന്ത്യാ വിഭജനത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് നിരപരാധികള്‍ കൊലചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടതിന് സാക്ഷി ആയ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലൗകികജീവിതത്തോട് വിരക്തി തോന്നുകയും സത്യാന്വേഷണത്തിനായി അദ്ദേഹം ശിഷ്ടകാലം നീക്കിവെക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
